The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA) is committed to promoting public awareness and understanding of radiation safety, nuclear security, and the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in Malawi. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA) is a statutory body established under the Atomic Energy Act No. 16 of 2011. AERA is responsible for regulating the safe, secure, and peaceful use of radiation sources and radioactive materials in Malawi

What is radiation

Radiation is energy that travels in the form of waves or particles. It occurs naturally in the environment and can also be produced artificially for beneficial uses such as medicine, industry, research, agriculture, and education

Where does radiation come from

Radiation comes from both natural and man-made sources. Natural sources include the sun, outer space, rocks, soil, water, and naturally occurring radioactive materials. Man-made sources include medical X-ray equipment, industrial gauges, and certain research applications

How is radiation used

Radiation is used in medicine for diagnosis and treatment, in industry for quality control and measurements, in research and education, in agriculture for improving productivity, and in mining and environmental studies
