To provide and maintain an effective, efficient and transparent national regulatory framework for the protection of people and the environment against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

To provide assurance for the adequate protection of people and the environment in the present and future generations against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
What We Regulate
AERA regulates activities and practices involving radiation sources,nuclear and radioactive materials. These include naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) facilities, medical facilities, academic and research institutions utilizing nuclear technology, construction and manufacturing companies and other industrial facilities using radiations sources.
How We Regulate
AERA regulates by issuing licences, permits and registration certificates; performing regulatory inspections; and enforcing compliance to requirements.
2. Radiation Safety and Security Directorate
This Directorate is the technical arm of the Authority that ensures that radiation sources, radioactive sources and nuclear materials are used within an appropriate regulatory framework including appropriate handling of incidents and emergencies. Radiation safety focuses on protection against harmful effects of ionizing radiation by implementing measures that ensure people and environment will not be exposed to harmful radiation doses. Security is focused on implementing measures that help prevent unauthorized access, vandalism or damage, loss or theft, and even unauthorized transfer of radioactive sources and nuclear material.

3. Finance, Human Resource and Admnistration
The directorate is responsible for providing finance and administrative services for AERA to ensure that the core functions are executed effectively and efficiently. The responsibilities are on issues related to financial planning and management, human resources management, administration, procurement, and office management. The directorate provides the following services:

Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA) is a government institution established through the Atomic Energy Act No. 16 of 2011, with the responsibility to administer the provisions of the Act to ensure adequate to protection of the people and the environment in present and future generations against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation without unduly limiting the benefits of the use of nuclear technology.
To exercise regulatory control over the importation, exportation, production, processing, handling, use, holding, storage, transportation and disposal of radiation sources, nuclear material and other radioactive materials in order to protect the public, workers and the environment against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
