Inspections are an important element of AREA's oversight of its licensees and Inspection and Enforcement Division is responsible for developing and conducts inspections according to sanctions 36 to 42 of the Atomic Energy Act of 2011. When licensees meet these requirements, we know that they are most likely conducting safe operations that protect the public and the environment from any undue nuclear risk.
A well implemented, rigorous inspection program supplemented by monitoring and performance reviews provides assurances that licence holders are operating safely. A risk-informed baseline inspection program defines the minimum level of planned inspections to evaluate performance over a defined period. Additional inspections are scheduled as needed. The responsibilities for the division include:
a) Conducts pre-licensing inspections to verify compliance with licensing conditions.
b) Conducts routine/scheduled inspections on facilities.
c) Carries out random inspections to ensure total facility compliance.

b) the licensee complies with the legislation and any imposed conditions during all the stages of the licensing process and the phases of the life cycle of a facility (siting, design, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning or closure);
The Objectives of Inspections is to verify that:
c) employees, including contractors, possess the necessary competence and are under occupational exposure monitoring;
d) deficiencies and deviations are corrected without undue delay
